DEVON EYES 22 -v- PLYMSTOCK PREDATORS 10

Devon Eyes faced a strong Plymstock side in a Division 2 match that has historically been a close fought fixture. Devon Eyes took control of the game from the off, with a string of shots from GA Tory Lake and GS Jenna LeGassick sending Devon Eyes racing into the lead.

Devon Eyes defensive trio of Charlotte Walton (GK), Danielle Pelley (GD) and Georgina Down (WD) worked tirelessly leaving Plymstock struggling to find a way through and remaining goalless for the quarter trailing 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was more evenly matched, with Plymstock’s Kelly Tyrell (GD) making the difference. Interceptions and sharp passing from Leanne Savage (WA) and Faye Stephens (C) moved play neatly down the court but Plymstock were determined to make a go of the game and picked up wayward passes and made the most of the rebounds.

The second half of the game saw Aquiline Dadey take to the court and switch with Georgina into WD to change up the defence. Georgina moved to WA and distributed power passes into the circle, with Faye Stephens fantastic at Centre. With a win in their sights, Devon Eyes pushed on and the attacking force of Jenna and particularly Tory were near perfect, scoring 7 goals to Plymstock’s 2. Again the Devon Eyes defence pressurised the opposing attack and forced errors which were capitalised on, taking the game to an exciting conclusion.

The final quarter was again a close encounter, with both teams scoring only a few goals and Plymstock were beginning to find their form but it was too little, too late and Devon Eyes won the game 22-10.

Congratulations to Devon Eyes Tory Lake and Kelly Tyrell of Plymstock who picked up the player of the match nominations.

Angels who are currently sitting in 2nd spot with a game in hand and having had a two week break, took on Marjon Kites.

Both teams were determined to put their stamp on the match but it was Angels who took the advantage with an 8 - 6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The attacking combination of Sharon Grigg, Donna O’Connor and Nikki Millings working well to convert the goals.

The second quarter followed much the same format with some strong defensive work by Elisa McKinly, Louise Dowd and Sharon Broughton in defence. Angels remained determined not to give up their lead and ended the second quarter 16 – 13.

The third quarter saw both teams make some changes with Lilly Tempero-Lewis coming on at GA and Jo Harvey at GD with Steph Cassidy moving from C to WD and Louise Dowd to C. Angels were able to optimise the fresh legs and edge further in front of their rivals with a 25 – 20 lead.

The fourth quarter saw Angels stamp their mark on the game eventually running out 35 – 23 winners.

In an exciting match, both teams squared up evenly with the first quarter matching each other goal for goal, with Total having a one goal advantage at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter Total got the bit between their teeth with Shooters Clare Tailling and Karen Sercombe converting some great goals.

Giggle girls had to contend with a strong defensive pairing of Clare Butcher and Kelly Faulkner who managed to limit Giggle Girls to only 4 goals in the quarter. Total at half time were 14 – 9 ahead.

The third quarter Total kept the pressure on with great centre court play from Emma Smith, Caroline Mathers and Chelsea Castell making some great interceptions, giving Total a 5 goal advantage.

Total freight put a final effort in the final quarter to finish 24 – 17.

Needless to say the girls won! The 1st half was played with the teams in their normal positions and the super sharp girls from Sharpserv showed their netball prowess winning the half 34 – 2. Taking pity on the boys, the next 2 quarters saw the teams mix up with an equal spread of net-balling talent.

The boys were getting the hang of it by the end!

Well done to Sharpserv who raised £135 for Children in Need from players and spectators.

This was the first game in the New year for Total Freight currently sitting at 4th in Division 4 against new comers to the league Madballs.

The game proved to be an extremely close and exciting game with both teams out to make their mark.

Totals shooters Sue Pullen and Karen Sercombe despite putting the goals away with good passing into the circle from Amy Manuel and Caroline Mathers meant that honours were even at the end of the first quarter with the teams tied on 7 a piece.

Heading into the 2nd quarter both teams were more settled but with neither team able to take the incentive the ball was played from end to end with only 7 goals being scored between both teams . Madballs however had a 1 goal advantage at the end of the 2nd.

Total made changes to their attack which changed the dynamic’s of their attacking game bringing on Claire Talling and Chelsea Castell. The changes to the attack, together with the good work being done by the Total defence, Kelly Faulkner and Clare Butcher, making some great interceptions saw Madballs trying to force long passes into the circle. Total turned these interceptions around quickly, moving the ball down the court with some precise slick passing in the centre court between Karen Somerset and Chelsea Castell. Claire Talling was finding the goal with great accuracy giving Total a lead of 16 – 12 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

It was all to play for in the 4th quarter with Madballs continuing to push for the victory but it was not enough to overtake Total who took 5 points from the match, but Madballs can be pleased with the 2 points they had picked up.

Congratulations to Kelly Faulkner(GK) from Total got player of the match.

This top of the table clash saw Nuffield Mini Angels taking on the highly experienced and long standing title holders Plymouth Pilgrims1. Pilgrims whose 20 year reputation goes before them were going to be a tough team to beat.

Angels with a fully fit squad opted to start with Elisa McKinly GK, Jo Harvey GD, Steph Sharp WD, Louise Dowd C, Sharon Grigg WA, Lilly Tempero-Lewis GA and Nikki Millings GS. Pilgrims fielding some of their regional players as expected started the stronger of the two teams winning the first quarter 12 – 7.

Angels however with a strong contingent of supporters cheering them and determined to give a good account of themselves fought back with some excellent attacking play pulling back the first quarter deficit and finishing the second quarter with a 19-17 lead.

Pilgrims made one change at half time but Angels opted to maintain their momentum and keep their team unchanged despite having two experienced players Donna O’Connor and Sharon Broughton on standby to come on. It was a touch decision but it paid off with Angels holding on to their two goal lead at the end of the third quarter 29-27.

Pilgrims piled on the pressure in the fourth quarter to close down the goal deficit but Angels proved to be extremely determined and cool under pressure. Angels knew that they had to convert their centre passes and continued to put their shots away to ensure that they kept their two goal cushion. Well done Angels who finished the match 40-38 winners.

Congratulations to Lilly Tempero-Lewis who picked up the nominated player award for Angels.
