The Plymouth Life Centre saw one of its first hotly contested matches when top of the table clash between Nuffield Mini Angels and Plymouth Pilgrims1 took place earlier this week.

In front of over 150 vocal and enthusiastic spectators who were there to support both teams, it was a head to head to see who would be crowned Premier A division and league winners for 2012.

Angels who had upset the form book in the first half of the season by winning their last encounter with Pilgrims by 2 goals were keen to see if they could repeat that result. Angels took to the Court with Elisa McKinley (GK), Jo Harvey (GD), Steph Cassidy (WD), Lou Dowd (C), Sharon Grigg (WA), Lily Tempero-Lewis (GA), Nikki Millings (GS). Angels were able to call on a highly expereinced set of reserves in Sharon Broughton and Donna O’Conner.

The game got underway with Pilgrims taking the early advantage, winning the first quarter 7-4. Angels soon settled though and despite some unforced errors being made by both sides they drew level at half time with the teams tied at 12-12.

Pilgrims shooters uncharacteristically were unable to convert a number of their shots in the third quarter giving Angels the opportunity to turn the ball over and capitalise. There was not much between the teams at the third quarter and it was all to play for in the fourth.

Pilgrims continued to press their small goal advantage with some tight defensive work. Angels however did not give up and continued to fight right to the last whistle but were unable to overturn Pilgrims who ran out eventual 21-27 winners.

McKinley, Angels captain, said she was extremely proud of the team, who have only been playing together as a team for the past year. She added that the team were now looking forward to next season to see whether they could repeat the fantastic season they have had this year. McKinley also said that special thanks should be given the family and friends and work colleagues who had come to support their games.

Well done to both teams who treated the crowd to a great game of netball which really showcased fabulous league netball at the Plymouth Life Centre.

With the 2011-12 season in the final weeks there are some intriguing matches to be played. Here are the matches that will have a major impact in deciding where the trophies go and who finishes at the bottom of the table.

Premier A

Monday 23rd April – 7pm – Plymouth Pilgrim 1 v Nuffield Mini Angels

This is effectively the title decider and winner should take all. As long as the winners win their final match on the 30th the winners will be crowned league champions. Pilgrims lead Nuffield by 1 point as both teams have lost 1 match this season. Pilgrims will be looking for revenge for the defeat before Christmas to Nuffield, 40-38.

Monday 30th April – 7pm – Plymouth Pilgrims 1 v Plymouth Marjon Kites

Monday 30th April – 8pm – Nuffield Mini Angles v West Insure

At the bottom of Premier A Condy beat Phoenix on Monday 16th to condemn Phoenix to 9th place in the table.

Premier B

PCC have already won the division but with 2 matches to go can they keep their 100% record in tact. Plymouth Univeristy 2 seem to be in pole position for 2nd place and they have 1 match to play; a win or a draw will secure the runners-up position. Sharperv, All Angles and Ivybridge, all on 58 points can all sneak the runners-up spot if the University lose their match against All Angles. With the teams playing each other over the next few weeks there is all to play for at the end of the season.

Monday 23rd April – 8pm – Ivybridge v All Angles

Monday 23rd April – 9pm – PCC v Plymouth Marjon Eagles

Monday 30th April – 7pm – PCC v Tamarside Sirens

Monday 30th April – 8pm – Ivybridge v Sharpserv

Monday 30th April – 9pm – University 2 v All Angles

With wins for Anixter and Curtis Marine at the bottom on the 16th April, there are 3 teams fighting to stay in the division. There are 2 matches which will decide the final league positions.

Monday 30th April – 9pm – Anixter v Curtis Marine

TBC – Plymouth Pilgrims 2 v Tamarside Sirens

Division 1

The 3 teams at the top have all beaten each other and the league positions will come down to the final match of the season. Plymouth University currently sit top with 83 points and have finished their season. If CSSA Plymouth Angles beat Bar Mez and win their other match they will win the title. If Bar Mez beat CSSA Plymouth Angles they will win the league as their goal difference is superior to the other 2 teams. The University need CSSA to win the match against Bar Mez but would need them slip up in their match on 23rd for them to remain at the top of the table.

Monday 30th April – 9pm – CSSA Plymouth Angles v Bar Mez

At the bottom all 3 teams are on 21 points. The Toms have 2 matches to go and Paper Hat and Dynamite D&C both have 1 match. Paper Hat need to win their match against Rentafford and hope the match between the 2 other teams finishes as a draw. They would then need both of the teams to lose heavily in their other match, as Paper Hat’s goal difference is inferior to the other 2 teams. Whoever wins the match between The Toms and Dynamite D&C would expect to be safe.

Monday 23rd April – 8pm – Rentafford v Paper Hat

Monday 23rd April – 9pm – The Toms v Tamarside Admirals

Monday 30th April – 7pm – Dynamite D&C v The Toms

Division 2

Kodak Shop have already won the division but there are a number of teams who could finish as runners-up. Plymstock have control over their destiny. If they beat Kodak and Ivybridge DRD they will finish in 2nd spot. If Dicsountedheating.co.uk beat Devon Eyes and Plymstock slip up they will claim 2nd spot. Devon Eyes will need to beat Discountedheating.co.uk and hope that Plymstock’s goal difference is reduced if Plymstock win 1 of the 2 matches. At the bottom Plymouth Marjon Kestrels have finished their season and will finish in 9th place. Ivybridge will need to win their final match and hope Parkhurst get beaten heavily for them to avoid finishing 2nd bottom.

Tuesday 17th April – 8pm – Discountedheating.co.uk v Devon Eyes

Tuesday 17th April – 9pm – Kodak Shop v Plymstock

Division 3

RP Matters have 2 matches to go and if they win them both they will win this division. If they slip up Plymstock 2 are waiting in the wings. Plymstock’s final match against Jubilee Mez might decide the final trophy winner in this division. If Jubilee win, OPUS will need to win both of their matches to finish 3rd. If Jubilee Mez lose then OPUS would probably only need to win 1 of their matches. At the bottom 8th and 9th place will be decided by the final match of the season between Elloways All Sports and Plymouth Sirens.

Tuesday 17th April – 8pm – Plymstock 2 v Jubilee Mez

Tuesday 17th April – 9pm – Primates v RP Matters

Tuesday 24th April – 7pm – OPUS Red v RP Matters

Tuesday 24th April – 9pm Elloways All Sports v Plymouth Sirens

Division 4

This division was decided a few weeks ago with Plymouth University 4 winning all 15 of their matches. The runners-up spot came down to the final match of the season. Giggles Girls beat OPUS Blue 26-18. OPUS threw the runners-up spot away as they only had to win 1 of their final 2 matches but weren’t able to achieve this.

The first netball match to be played in the new Plymouth Life Centre got underway earlier today and saw two competitive sides face up to one another in front of a large crowd.

The two teams, Net Angels and Tigers, were made up of players from the Plymouth League, including those who have played a part in getting netball a new home in the Life Centre – Captains Elsia McKinley and Sharron Robbie urged their teams to provide a great exhibition of netball to those watching – and both teams certainly went flat out to show just why netball is such a great game.

The game, which was officiated by Karen Jones and Marc Whaley, was fiercely fought with plenty of action at both ends. Shooters for both teams found the new sunken posts a litte difficult with the rings being particularly flexible – lots of re-bounds here for the defence to pick up though!

Final score – 26 – 21 to the Tigers. To see more images from the match please visit our FaceBook page – Plymouth & District Netball.

There are now less than five weeks to go until the new Life Centre opens its doors to the public for the first time.

Work is pressing ahead on finishing all areas including the pool hall,

climbing zone, main sports hall, dry-dive, multipurpose area and bowls rink ahead of the building’s official unveiling in March.

Everyone Active, the League’s new sponsors and the company tasked with operating the centre in partnership with Plymouth City Council, will begin fitting out the building and training its staff at the end of this month.

Plans are now being put in place for a Big Open Weekend, with lots of activities to try for free, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March. Further details will be announced soon!

Chair of Everyone Active Plymouth Netball, Sharron Robbie says, “it is hugely excited that all the planning and which has gone into ensuring that netball has a new home is about to become a reality”. Sharron went on to say that “she was even more excited about seeing the reaction and faces of the league’s players as they take to the Court for the first time!”.

League matches get under way in the Life Centre on Monday 26 March.
